Keisha Lance Bottoms says President Donald Trump’s tariffs are “wreaking havoc for the living and the dead,” pointing to rising casket prices as another expense facing families.
The Democratic candidate for Georgia governor remarked during a rally in Cobb County on Saturday (October 17), recounting a conversation with a woman who owns a mortuary in Tifton, Georgia.
“And since Trump’s reckless tariffs have gone into effect, families have watched the cost of gas and groceries continue to climb,” Bottoms said. “Just yesterday, I met with a woman in Tifton who owns a mortuary, and she even told me that the prices of caskets have gone up. Donald Trump is wreaking havoc for the living and the dead.”
Bottoms said Georgians are “being squeezed at every turn” but encouraged supporters to remain hopeful, invoking her faith.
“But my faith reminds me that joy comes in the morning,” she said. “And across this state, Georgia, it’s morning time.”
Her remarks come as Democrats mobilize ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. Former President Barack Obama is scheduled to campaign in Atlanta on October 28 alongside Bottoms and U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff, according to CBS News.
Bottoms is seeking to become Georgia’s first Black woman governor, while Ossoff is defending his Senate seat against Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Collins.
