Michael P. Desronvil, the lone holdout juror in Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial, reportedly believes his identity as a Black Republican may be contributing to the backlash he has faced since the case ended in a mistrial.
Desronvil, 48, was the only juror who would not agree with the other 11 members of the panel, who favored finding Clancy not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility. The jury deadlocked after more than 40 hours of deliberations.
The New York Post reported that YouTuber Ray Marcel spoke with Desronvil and said the juror believes his conservative political views may have made him a target.
“He’s a Republican. He is a black Republican. He has conservative views,” Marcel said in the video posted Wednesday (September 16), recounting what Desronvil told him. Marcel added that Desronvil believed he might be targeted because of those views.
Desronvil has defended his decision in the case. In a statement released Thursday, he said he “didn’t have any doubts” about his position, according to the Post.
“As I tried to explain different possible theories during deliberation, I kept getting cut off as if I had doubts based on the evidence presented,” Desronvil said, according to the Post.
Marcel also said Desronvil told him that he believed the evidence showed Clancy knew what she was doing and planned the killings.
Clancy, 36, was accused of killing her three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, at their Duxbury, Massachusetts, home in January 2023. Her defense argued that she was not criminally responsible because of severe postpartum mental illness. The jury’s inability to reach a unanimous verdict resulted in a mistrial.
Clancy is scheduled to return to court September 29, when prosecutors are expected to address the next steps in the case.
