A Georgia lawmaker has introduced a bill that could officially recognize the state’s deep love for lemon pepper chicken wings, per WRBL.

On Thursday (January 22), State Rep. Eric Bell (D-Jonesboro) introduced House Bill 1013, a bipartisan measure that would designate lemon pepper as Georgia’s official wing flavor. Bell described the proposal as a “lighthearted bill” with cultural significance.

“Lemon pepper wings have become a staple of southern cuisine in Atlanta and across Georgia,” Bell said in an Instagram post announcing the bill. “This is a lighthearted bill, but it carries real meaning. Lemon pepper wings are a fan-favorite that bring people together across race, culture, class and community.”

Bell said the flavor has become synonymous with Atlanta and Georgia’s cultural influence, extending from nightlife and food to music and popular culture. He pointed to references ranging from Magic City’s famed “Lemon Pepper Lou” to lyrics in songs by artists including Gucci Mane, Ziggy2Playa, and Rick Ross.

“Just like the peach represents our agricultural roots, lemon pepper wings represent Georgia’s cultural flavor and global influence,” Bell wrote.

According to the legislation, Atlanta restaurant J.R. Crickets is credited with popularizing chicken wings in Georgia, initially serving them in the traditional Buffalo style. Over time, Georgians transformed wings into a cultural staple by creating distinct local flavors, with lemon pepper emerging as the most iconic.

“Among these, lemon pepper has emerged as a flavor that is distinctly tied to Georgia, representing creativity, boldness, and Southern hospitality,” the bill reads.

House Bill 1013 has drawn bipartisan support, with co-sponsors including Reps. Dexter Sharper (D-Valdosta), Kasey Carpenter (R-Dalton), David Huddleston (R-Roopville), and Mekyah McQueen (D-Smyrna).

“We’re all human, we all have to eat,” Bell told CBS News. “It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t like lemon pepper in some form. Even if they say they don’t like it hot, they’ll tell you they like mild lemon pepper — as long as it’s got the sprinkles on it.”
