President Donald Trump is again hinting at finding a loophole to serve a third presidential term.
During a White House summit on Monday (August 18), Trump appeared at a joint press conference with several European leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who noted that his country couldn't safely hold elections amid its conflict with Russia, per PEOPLE.
Trump used the moment to suggest that he could suspend the 2028 presidential election if the U.S. were engaged "in a war" at that time.
“So, let me just say, three and a half years from now… if we happen to be in a war with somebody, no more elections. Oh, that’s good," the president joked.
Trump's quip comes amid his ongoing comments about the idea of serving a third term. The president has been openly promoting “Trump 2028” merchandise and telling reporters, “There are some loopholes that have been discussed.” Trump also previously stated that he's "not joking" about remaining president beyond two terms.
Trump cannot legally serve a third term as president under the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution. Amending the Constitution would be a highly unlikely process requiring a 2/3 vote in both houses of Congress and ratification by 3/4 of U.S. states.
During Monday's press conference, Trump also amplified unfounded claims of voter fraud, targeting mail-in ballots and voting machines in favor of “watermark paper,” which he insisted would ensure honesty in future elections.
"I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS," Trump wrote Monday on Truth Social, "and also, while we’re at it, Highly 'Inaccurate,' Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES, which cost Ten Times more than accurate and sophisticated Watermark Paper, which is faster, and leaves NO DOUBT, at the end of the evening, as to who WON, and who LOST, the Election."
