Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams has emerged as the leading candidate in the Democratic primary of the ongoing New York mayoral election. A recently released Ipsos Poll found that Adams holds an 8% lead over former presidential candidate Andrew Yang. Following behind Yang and Adams, legal analyst Maya Wiley, New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer and former HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan round out the top five. Fighting for a way back into the race, former Wall Street executive Ray McGuire and nonprofit executive Dianne Morales are polling at less than 10%.“
"At a time of great uncertainty and great challenges across the five boroughs, New York City voters are coalescing around the more ideologically moderate candidates in the race for mayor,” lobbyist George Fontas told the New York Post.
“Our poll shows Eric Adams and Kathryn Garcia both have strong momentum as we enter the final stretch.”
This latest Ipsos Poll marks a stark change in the New York mayoral race. At the start of the campaigning period, Yang shot to the top of polls because of the profile he had built during the most recent presidential election. However, Adams and Garcia have stormed back in recent weeks because of their connection to everyday voters and performances in recent debates. However, it is important to note that part of Garcia's campaign strategy in recent weeks has been to form an alliance with Yang.
Both Garcia and Adams have the potential to make history in the upcoming election. If Adams wins the primary and succeeds in November, he would become the second Black man to ever serve as mayor in the nation's largest city. If Garcia were to win, she would be the first woman to serve as mayor of New York City.
