The 2021 WNBA is off to a fast start and history has already been made in Atlanta, Georgia. This week, the Atlanta Dream announced the formation of its first broadcast team consisting completely of Black women. LaChina Robinson and Tabitha Turner will handle color commentary while Angel Gray and Autumn Johnson handle analysis.
"The Dream was the first professional team I covered when I started my journalism career in college, so this is a full-circle moment to have the opportunity to call my first WNBA game along with phenomenal women who I look up to and constantly asked questions to when I covered these games," Autumn Johnson wrote on Instagram after the news became public.
"I’m so humbled and grateful!"
Atlanta Dream Co-Owner Renee Montgomery and Phoenix Mercury Guard Skylar Diggins-Smith were two of the many members of the WNBA community to express their support for the broadcast team. Each member of the crew brings their own unique experience within the basketball world. Robinson is a former Wake Forest University basketball star who has worked for ESPN and FOX Sports. Gray comes to the Atlanta Dream while also working as the sideline reporter for FOX Sports Ohio. Rounding out the team, Johnson has covered the Dream and the NBA 2K League while Turner has covered women's basketball in the ACC.
"[I am] excited to be back [with] the [home team] and [I am] even more excited to be a part of the Atlanta Dream's very first all-female and all-Black broadcast team! And I couldn’t ask to work with better, more professional women," Turner said.
"I’m just fortunate to be asked to be a part of the amazing things surrounding the franchise and city! As soon as my NBA season comes to a close, I’m elated to gear up for the WNBA's 25th season," Gray added.
The Atlanta Dream is set to kick off its 2021 campaign on May 14 against the Connecticut Sun.
