Author Ta-Nehisi Coates Set To Write 'Superman' Reboot

Author Ta-Nehisi Coates has reportedly signed on to write the next Superman film. This is the latest film Coates has signed on to write. He is currently working on the film, Wrong Answer, with Ryan Coogler.

“Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Between the World and Me opened a window and changed the way many of us see the world,” Toby Emmerich of Warner Bros. told Shadow & Act.

Coates will join a star-studded production team that is led by J.J. Abrams. Abrams is best known for his work o Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Super 8 and Cloverfield.

“There is a new, powerful and moving Superman story yet to be told. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the brilliant Mr. Coates to help bring that story to the big screen, and we’re beyond thankful to the team at Warner Bros. for the opportunity,” Abrams added.

In this role, Coates will become the first Black man in the modern era to write a Superman film. Recent Superman films have been written by Michael Dougherty, Dan Harris, Bryan Singer, Chris Terrio, Davig Goyer and Christopher Nolan.

The upcoming Superman film will end the franchise's five-year layoff. In 2013, Henry Cavill starred as Superman in Man of Steel. He then returned in Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Man of Steel received generally favorable reviews, but Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice was overwhelmingly disliked by critics. Deadline has reported that Cavill is "eager" to return as Superman, but it is unclear if he will reprise the role in the forthcoming film. In the meantime, he will star as Superman in the upcoming Justice League release.

Warner Bros. has not yet shared a release date for the film.
