A white inmate was found guilty of hate crime homicide in the 2022 murder of a Black prisoner at Green Bay Correctional Institution.

According to the Green Bay Press-Gazette, a jury handed down the guilty verdict to Joshua Scolman, 40, following a trial that began on Monday (April 22) for the stabbing death of 25-year-old Timothy Nabors.

Scolman was also convicted of attempting to kill prisoner Lamonte Washington, 26, with a dangerous weapon and as a hate crime.

Evidence presented during the trial included a letter written by Scolman in December 2023 that included racial slurs and antisemitic statements. Scolman also wrote that he chose to attack Nabors and Washington because they were Black.

The stabbing occurred on October 21, 2022 after prisoners were released from their cells for medication distribution. Scolman was accused of stabbing Nabors with a handmade knife and later chasing Washington around the Green Bay Correctional Institution.

Nabors was left with a stab wound to his chest. He was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Following the guilty verdict, the jury must now determine if Scolman is criminally responsible for the homicide and attempted homicide. The jury could find Scolman not criminally responsible due to mental disease or defect. Scolman has entered a not-guilty plea by reason of insanity.

The choice could determine whether Scolman faces prison or is sentenced to a treatment center.
